ARLINGTON, Texas – A two-time “Teacher of the Year” in Arlington is now fighting to keep her job after allegedly telling a Hispanic student to “Go back to Mexico.” Barnett Junior High School math teacher Shirley Bunn has 24 years of teaching experience. But her career could end with what she called a moment of frustration. Bunn admitted she lost her temper on Sept. 30 while distributing Title 1 forms to her eighth grade students.
According to public documents, a student who had a history of being disruptive repeatedly asked his teacher for a form printed in Spanish by saying, “I’m Mexican. I’m Mexican.”
The documents said Bunn tried to tell him that he could get the forms in the office but he continued to argue with her and repeat, “I’m Mexican.”
In response, Bunn blurted out “[Then] go back to Mexico.”

What an embarrassment to the school system!!! When i read ithe headline alone i was uphauled at the teacher. Then to find it was the child causing a disturbance saying “I’m from Mexico” over & over AND that this child has a history of being disruptive! Then to find out this teacher volunteers her time to Mexican organizations. The headline completely exaggerates the story in the same way that the school district did!!! This teacher obviously has dedicated her life to educate our youth in addition to her volunteer hours. I’m not saying that there are not teachers in the system that don’t deserve to be there’ but that is NOT the case here in my opinion. I do not tolerate racism is ANY form & this was not racism. Was there a more effective way to respond? Maybe.. But either way more serious offensives are accepted everyday. If I were pregnant & I had a a job to do but I kept using “I am pregnant” to cause a scene & get out of a situation it would merit the same response. She was not using his ethnic background to be offensive; the child himself was doing that! This school system has used this incidence as a horrible example of how to give rebellious children a way of causing problems within the school system! I believe God has a message in every situation. I pray that Mrs Bunn hold her head high knowing that maybe this situation will bring awareness to problems that can arise & hopefully better enable others to respond in a more effective way. The school system in ARlimgton owes this teacher an apology for exaggerating this situation.

Teachers are human and do not have limitless patience, nor do they lack emotion…..in fact most teachers have a great deal of patience and much passion for children and the profession. Administrators and BOEs must understand this, and support teachers in their classrooms. Swift and clear reprimands for students who disrupt the learning environment and avoid doing “their JOB”, must be in place. Consistent rebellious and provoking behaviors destroy a classroom, and in this case may destroy a good teacher’s career. Student codes of conduct must be clearly stated, understood by all parties, and regularly enforced in order to maintain the integrity of the learning environment, and protect other students and all teachers.

The last time I checked, this was the United States of America, NOT the United States of Mexico. If the student and his family are living and hopefully working here in this country and he is attending school here, then he is an American.

I have to totally agree with Mr. J. Canning. Thank you for your service. A statement he made concerning this is not the “United States of Mexico”. I don’t know anymore, I feel like the minority anymore, all roofing companies around the midwest, (KC), area are all Mexicans, lawn care, Mexicans, restaurant ‘s, Mexicans. Have you ever bought anything in the store that does not have the Spanish translation, not German, Chinese, Japanese or Mideastern, just Spanish. Why do they get free dental care, brasses the whole shabang and I can’t get false teeth and my kids can’t get brasses? Why? Because we ain’t Mexicans! We make to much money and pay taxes. I went to McDonalds the other day and all the employees were Spanish speaking. Their was three Mexican girls who spoke English, they would take orders, translate them to other employees. The whole time I was there the only english words I heard was “may I help you” and “Did you want fries with that?” I was very intimidated. We are talking central United States at a McDonalds for Gods sake. You trying to tell me that no caucasions wanted these jobs? Bull! There are gonna be thousands of kids graduating, you think they might need a job? Next time I go in there, if they are all speaking Spanish, I am gonna scream, you are in America, now act like it. I wrote to Betty Crocker to complain about directions in Spanish on their products stating that this catering has got to stop. Their reply was their is a market to reach. Its all about the money not your country or countrymen. I work for a state revenue office in the sales tax department for vehicles. Mexicans call and state,”I am illegal, I do not pay taxes”. I get to reply, “You may not pay state or federal taxes, but you do pay sales tax. Sales tax is due to the state of XXXX on the purchase of this vehicle”. I have just read an article informing me that one of your teachers has been suspended for telling a student, in a moment of intense frustration, to “go back to Mexico”. In some contexts telling a foreign born person to go back to the country the came from could reasonably be considered an extremely rude and racist remark and would be quite unacceptable. In this particular instance it appeared to be nothing of the kind. The context of Ms Bunn’s remark makes it clear that the student deliberately and repeatedly provoked her. As a psychologist it seems to me that just about anyone would respond with something similar under this kind of pressure, even excellent teachers like Ms Bunn. Under similar circumstance I could imagine saying the same kind of thing myself, in spite of the fact that I am quite strongly anti-racist, happen to be an “alien” resident of the U.S.A. and happen to have a lot of Mexican friends.
It doesn’t matter what race this student belongs to, he is to blame here for the incident. The teacher is his victim. By suspending the teacher you have given this troublesome and immature young man tremendous power over your staff. He now knows that he can not only get away with his behavior but he can hold his teachers to ransom. You have sent the wrong message to the wrong person. Please rethink your position.

I was born in Cuba in 1962 and came to the USA in 1970. First thing I did is learning the English language. When in Rome etc. This Country of ours has been made great by the melting pot. I am Hispanic, and I will say learn the language or go home.

I’m a mobile notary, and I help people sign their loan documents. I meet people from all over the world who have come to this country. I have met people whose first language is: German, Polish, French, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, etc. They ALL speak English. They ALL expect their childen to speak English. They don’t expect everything bilingual for them or their families. Only MEXICANS pester me about “Why you no-a es-speak-a es-Spanish?” Hispanics from other countries don’t stay this to me, only Mexicans.
Mexicans, as far as I can tell, are not an ethicity, but a nationality. They work together like a many-celled giant organsim with an intent to overthrow our country. The legal ones protect the illegal ones. When they get in a hiring position, they only hire other Mexicans. They know it is their job to have as many babies as possible to overwhelm our country. When Mexicans marry a non-Mexican, they raise the children to be Mexicans, not Americans. They also want nothing to do with non-Mexican Hispanics because they are very racist.

I am half Hispanic. I attended school with other hispanics and I have an opinion for both sides. If the teacher was Teacher of the Year and all then she should have known better than to lose her cool and make a comment like that. She should know that she leads by example. However, she has admitted that she knows she lost her cool and that the comment was wrong. She has taken the high road and admitted what she did wrong.
Speaking of taking the high road… something this kid obviously knows nothing about. I went to school with many hispanics and witnessed the same type of behavior out of the hispanic kids as this kid displayed. They would do things to gain attention and interrupt class with remarks like “can you repeat everything in spanish?” or “No habla ingles” even though they grew up here in America and knew english very well. It all boils down to hispanics making racial jokes, however, they expect anglo Americans, or as one racist person above called them ‘gringos’, to refrain from making such remarks. It is nothing more than immigrants, some of them probably even illegal, exploiting our laws and rights. Not all hispanics are like this though. It is only a select few that will continue to be a problem until something is done about it.
And as for the racist person who posted earlier about drugs coming to America, maybe if your country got its crap together then maybe America wouldn’t have problems with illegal immigrants and your country wouldn’t have to rely on money from smuggling drugs. And then just maybe Mexico wouldn’t have to rely on us to fix their problem for them because they obviously can’t handle it themselves. But hey, you can continue to try and be like us Americans. The teacher is just frustrated about the overrun off illegals on the border, just like everyone else is. If you want to blame someone, then blame the government for the last 50 years of not enforcing our immigration, border, and hiring laws.
