You called, you emailed, you bombarded their Facebook page with outrage. And Shirley Bunn is now back on the job.
The Arlington School District this weekend reinstated Bunn. You may recall from our post a week earlier that she had been suspended for telling a frequently disruptive Hispanic student “Go back to Mexico“, after he repeatedly asked her for a set of forms in Spanish, yelling “I’m Mexican…I’m Mexican”. Even after Ms. Bunn told him he could get Spanish-language forms in the main office, the kid continued to harrass her for Spanish forms, yelling “I’m Mexican…I’m Mexican”, after which Bunn admitted she lost her temper and told him where he could go (and indeed the vast majority of our commenters agreed with her sentiments).
On Friday, the school board voted 5-2 to reinstate her to the school. An emotional Bunn was brought to tears over the ordeal, and most of the parents in attendance were overjoyed to have this two-time “Teacher of the Year” back in class.
Thank you to everyone who responded to our post. Nearly 3,000 SWA members left messages on the school district’s Facebook page, and many thousands more sent emails or made phone calls to demand Bunn reinstatement, and the word spread as new site TheBlaze.com linked to our posts the next day.You made a big difference, and all’s well that ends well!
But not everyone was happy. The pro-amnesty group LULAC was in attendance and wanted Bunn terminated. They reacted angrily when the vote came through. Said Luis Castillo, a past president of the Arlington LULAC: “The Arlington School Board condones racial remarks by it’s teachers. That’s very disturbing.”
What’s really disturbing is that any school board would take an extremist group like LULAC seriously in the first place. This is the same group which has declared the U.S.-Mexican border “illegal”, and has been caught transporting illegal aliens from the border to Houston in their “shuttle vans”. And who can forget the Wisconsin LULAC member who once claimed that Arizona does not share a border with Mexico. NO elected official should ever again let LULAC in their door, let alone consider their advice seriously.

I feel you want to be taught in spanish, french, or whatever language you speak, go there. When I go out of the United States I do not expect them to cater to me because Ithey do not speak my language. why punish a teacher for something the student cannot do
Good for Arlington. I used to live there. Its time to take this country back. I am fed up with the illegal trash that is eating away at our country like a cancer. If we do not get a president into office to stop this madness, this country is going to be destroyed. Her comments were not racist, that hispanic student is being taught to treat Americans like that by his country and his family. Barron, Hogg, Reich, Sullins, Hibbs, Pompa and Pena. Seems if there is any logic at all in the decision it was lost on the board member Pena in what I would think is a racist decision. I do not think Pompa is generally a Hispanic sur name but then what can lead this one to decide such behavior from a student is acceptable. I believe moving the teacher from her location is far too much concession in this case. There should be some discipline for the student and a thorough investigation into whether he should be in the USA or not. I do not apologize for wanting this not to be a nation colonized by Mexicans or any other nation. If you are here you should be 100 percent USA American!

I am curious as to why some of the respondents are blaming President Obama. he has proven his citizenship. I think that some context is required as to Texas illegals. Texas has been run by Republicans for a long time. It has been under their leadership that illegal immigration has become rampant. I used to teach in Texas schools along the Rio Grande border while Bush was Governor of Texas. We were instructed to never inquire about their legal status or citizenship. That was Republican policy. I do agree that the child was disrespectful. i also agree that the teacher probably spoke out of anger as her quote indicated. I also believe that we are way too sensitive when it comes to issues of race. What she said was inappropriate because professional adults should not lose their cool with children, but it certainly was not worthy of being suspended either. The bigger issue is that children do not respect their elders or their betters. Teachers are trained professionals with college degrees. They are not servants. Jesus was called rabbi, which is Hebrew for teacher. Parents used to back up teachers, now they always side with their child. 20 years ago, the kid would have been paddled at school, possibly suspended and then whipped with a belt at home and probably grounded too. if we had a little more of that, then maybe kids would show more respect, be more independent, and fulfill their potential. Instead, they make excuses, react with anger, and feel entitled to everything while doing little or nothing. I wonder how many of the heroes that served in WW2 were whipped with a belt.

“Go back to mexico”, when the kid repeatedly yells “I’m mexican!” Is not a racial statement. It’s answering him. If he doesn’t understand the instructions of where to get the forms, he should be put in a class that speaks his language. What do they want from her? Is she supposed to learn spanish to meet the needs of students that dont understand? How can anyone expect any student to learn in a class that is in another language? Teachers all over the world cant be expected to learn the language of all the children in their country. If you want to teach mexican students, hire a mexican teacher, then stress, Learn english so they can get by where they live, or go back to where they speak your language. In mexican schools they encourage english as a second language, what school has this kid been going to.
