An Ohio lawmaker on Wednesday proposed an Arizona-style immigration law – the first new state legislation since the Supreme Court upheld the key provision of S.B. 1070 in June.
State Rep. Courtney Combs (Facebook link), a Republican from Hamilton, said that he came up with the idea for the law more than a year ago but did not move forward because the similar law in Arizona was being challenged. He is going ahead now, because as he said the Supreme Court has “ironed out the issue”.
“I have no problem with immigration,” Combs said. “Immigration is a great thing, but it’s got to be done right. It’s got to be done legally.”
Combs’ bill would have police officers question a person’s immigration status if pulled over for any violation. The bill also states that an officer should not consider a person’s race, color or national origin in determining whether reasonable suspicion exists, as in the Arizona law.
Combs said he was also deeply concerned with how drug and human smugglers were increasing drug trafficking and crime in the state.
“We, Ohioans, are in the middle of all this drug trafficking, and yes, there is a problem in Ohio with illegal immigrants with drugs, and we need to stop it,” Combs said.
Combs said that he will introduce the legislation in September, as soon as the House returns from recess.

Ohioans – like most Americans – are sick of illegal aliens taking jobs, and bankrupting schools, hospitals and social services in their state. FAIR has estimated that illegal aliens and their dependents cost Ohio taxpayers a breathtaking $878 million every single year – amounting to a $200 yearly burden for each Ohio household headed by a U.S. citizen.
With those staggering costs, and the massive impact on unemployment in this tough economy, Ohio can’t afford not to pass the Combs bill.
Meanwhile, “Dream Activist Ohio” member Nick Torres tried to peddle the same tired rhetoric that such a law would lead to racial profiling, but instead simply handed us a moment of comic relief:
“I think it’s hard to make that distinction of undocumented versus documented versus immigrant versus native…I’m a lifelong Ohioan, but I don’t know if I’ll be placed under suspicion. I’ve got dark hair.”
Seriously? You can’t make this stuff up. They really are that ridiculous.
