Sheriff Joe Arpaio is facing an unprecedented campaign to recall him from office. This follows a re-election campaign last year which saw unprecedented amounts spent on both sides, as George Soros committed $10 million to oust “America’s Sheriff”. Joe was forced to spend his entire ‘war chest’ of $8 million to (barely) hold onto office – the closest race of his career.

Why?

Why is the Left in America so focused on a single county’s Sheriff, and willing to spend Congressional-level funds to defeat him?

Well for starters, Sheriff Joe is the biggest national symbol in the fight against illegal immigration. He has refused to back down from enforcing the immigration laws most law enforcement officials ignore, even in the face of attacks by race-baiting activists and lawsuits from the Obama Administration. His  ‘Tent City’, pink underwear and cheap eats for inmates are legendary across America.

In addition, Sheriff Joe has taken a strong stand against Federal gun control – further angering the Left. Joe deployed his Posse to defend schools from would-be madmen like the one who targeted the kids in Newtown. He also said he would refuse to enforce any new gun-control laws from Washington – by far the largest county Sheriff to do so.

But perhaps the real reason Sheriff Joe is endlessly (and expensively) targeted is because he aggressively pursues a strategy that hits at the very heart of amnesty proponents.  Arpaio systematically conducts workplace raids on companies discovered to have employees who gained employment by using fake or stolen IDs. Those illegal aliens who are arrested in his raids are typically charged with felonies. And any illegals who are convicted of or plea to a felony are put on the fast-track for deportation, or at the very least are barred from ever gaining citizenship or legal status under any version of “immigration reform” legislation. They are even barred from  Obama’s DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Understandably, this has enraged the Left.

The worksite raids began in 2008, after Arizona passed an employer-sanctions law meant to impose civil penalties on companies that knowingly hire undocumented workers. The Obama DOJ, La Raza and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce all challenged the law but Arizona prevailed in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011. But starting in 2008, Sheriff Arpaio and the Maricopa  County Attorney decided to use the new law to crack down on workers using false documents and charge them with identity theft. This strategy would  ensure that a criminal record would keep illegal aliens from ever obtaining citizenship.

Arpaio has conducted 71 such workplace raids since 2008, arresting many hundreds of illegal alien identity thieves in the process. Workers are often charged with multiple counts of identity theft, typically a Class 4 felony, and offered plea bargains to a lower charge, such as “taking the identity of another,” a Class 6 violation. But even with such a conviction, they are typically guaranteed to be deported, and regardless, can never gain legal status in the U.S. under any current or proposed legislation.

“Joe’s Law” has had an outsized impact on illegal immigration in Arizona. Maricopa County may be just one county, but it is the 4th largest in the United States. And Arpaio and his deputies arrest a staggering 25% of all illegals detained by law enforcement each year in the U.S. Coupled with the landmark immigration law SB1070, Joe’s Law has sent illegal alien fleeing from the state. Since 2008, when Arpaio began his raids, an estimated 200,000 illegal aliens have fled Arizona, according to DHS data. By contrast, since Obama took office, he has slashed worksite enforcement by over 70%.

There is nothing to stop other states from following Joe’s lead. Arizona-style employer sanctions and ID theft laws, with Sheriffs willing to prosecute illegals for felony crimes, is the model for states whose legislatures want to enforce the rule of law, in opposition to the Obama Administration’s multiple channels of amnesty.

The Left is seething at Sheriff Joe’s actions. In a piece in Salon.com, Arpaio is lambasted for “cheating immigration reform” and “shattering dreams of immigrants”, when of course he is merely doing what every Sheriff, police chief and ICE ought to be doing: enforcing the laws on the books.

The group behind the Arpaio recall, Puente, is quoted in the Salon piece:

“Maricopa County is the only county that is doing these raids. They don’t have to do these raids–that is immigration’s job,” said Carlos Garcia, director of Puente, a pro-immigrant and human rights organization in Phoenix. “If we don’t stop Arpaio…the people from the 71 raids are never going to be able to obtain citizenship or any other legal status in the country because of the felonies.”

That’s right. This is Sheriff Joe’s “secret weapon” against amnesty and it enrages the Left that a county Sheriff who cannot be fired is able to so easily stymie their plans for illegal alien amnesty – which explains why they are so desperate to recall him from office. And so long as he remains Sheriff, no one  – not the DOJ, nor the “Gang of Eight”, nor Obama or Napolitano – can stop him from enforcing the law and torpedoing amnesty for every illegal alien he books for identity theft.

So long as he remains Sheriff, that is. Whether or not George Soros and his Leftist allies can recall Joe from office, only time will tell. We will continue to stand with him. Way to go, Joe!

Chris Crane warned us.

The ICE agent leader who is suing his own bosses at DHS to stop their lawless “prosecutorial discretion” policies – told us that DHS’ policy of releasing illegal aliens would put the Americ an people at risk.

Crane also said that ICE leaders were lying when they insisted that the 2,262 illegal alien “detainees” they released in February (using the “sequestration” as an excuse) were all “low-risk”, “non-criminal”  illegals without records.

And yesterday, Crane was proven correct when ICE was compelled – under threat of Congressional subpoena - to reveal the details of those released, which they had previously refused to reveal. And the data is shocking: 622 of the aliens released – nearly 30% – were convicted criminals, with 32 having multiple violent felony convictions.

During two congressional hearings in March, ICE Director John Morton insisted that only detainees who did not pose a threat to public safety were released and that all remained under supervision.

Morton now should be compelled to resign. The documents were released to Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Carl Levin (D-MI). McCain stopped short of calling for Morton’s firing, but lashed out over reports that dozens of those criminals released went onto Arizona streets:

“ICE’s reprehensible actions put Arizona at risk by setting free into our communities hundreds of detainees who were guilty of criminal offenses,” said McCain. “The ICE officials responsible for this must face disciplinary action and must take all actions necessary to ensure that this never happens again.”

Chris Crane was not surprised, and said this is the very reason he is suing to stop DHS and ICE from their disastrous virtual amnesty for illegal aliens: “They are putting the public at great risk by refusing to enforce the laws on the books against violent felons and repeat offenders.”

Crane’s lawsuit, Crane v. Napolitano, received a big boost two weeks ago when Federal Judge Judge Reed O’Connor told DHS that they had no power to refuse to deport illegal aliens, and that he was likely to strike down Obama’s virtual “DACA” amnesty for millions of illegal aliens. The judge is expected to give his final ruling in the next week or two, which the Obama Administration will no doubt appeal.

ICE and DHS are out of control and jeopardizing public safety, all in the name of politics. Yet another example of why DHS cannot be trusted to enforce the law or secure the border if the ‘Gang of 8′ immigration bill were to  become law.

Chris Crane, president of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers union, spoke to radio host Mark Levin, and unleashed two bombshells that should outrage all Americans.

First, that Obama is “cooking the books” on his so-called “record” deportation numbers – inflating them by up to 50%, by Crane’s estimate.

And perhaps most shocking, Crane revealed that the race-baiting pressure group La Raza is effectively “running” ICE – forcing agents to stop enforcing the law against illegal aliens nationwide. 

Crane revealed these stunning facts to a disgusted Levin on his radio show Thursday night (audio below).

Crane is suing his own bosses at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a landmark case, Crane v. Napolitano, to try and halt the Administration’s orders to ICE agents to stop enforcement of Federal immigration laws.

On April 24, Crane – who represents 7,200 agents nationwide – won a stunning initial court victory in his lawsuit against the Obama Administration.  As SWA reported at the time, Federal Judge Federal Judge Reed O’Connor told DHS that they had no power to refuse to deport illegal aliens, and that he was likely to strike down Obama’s virtual “DACA” amnesty for millions of illegal aliens. The ruling shocked the Washington establishment, and Crane’s lawsuit (you can donate here) could derail Obama’s four-year effort to undermine immigration enforcement nationwide.

Crane explained to Levin how President Obama and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano have, since the administration’s start, “attempted to shut down” border enforcement and “absolutely” tied law enforcement’s hands.

For example, Crane explained that ICE agents are not allowed (despite express authority from Congress) to arrest an individual they suspect to be an illegal alien, an illegal alien gang member, or illegal alien criminal. Instead, they are reportedly under orders to wait until the individual commits a crime, is arrested by another law enforcement agency (such as local police), jailed, and only then may an immigration agent speak with the individual.

Additionally, the deportation process can only begin if the individual has been convicted of three or more criminal offenses.

Despite the Obama Administration’s claims of robust border enforcement and record-high ICE deportation numbers, Crane noted how the administration actually cooks the books and inflates deportation numbers. Data that Crane obtained demonstrates that, since 2008, ICE arrests and deportations “have plummeted.”

Crane explained how it works: Border Patrol (a separate agency from ICE) makes an arrest on the border, but instead of handling the deportation itself, Border Patrol hands the detainee over to ICE to deport the individual, thereby inflating the number of ICE deportations. Crane described it as a “shell game” that allows what would normally be a mere “turn-back” to be counted as a formal “deportation,” thus inflating the deportation statistics.

Crane’s claims are fully backed up by official ICE documents that were revealed as a result of his lawsuit against DHS.

Crane also noted that he has received “no response at all” to his requests for meetings with three Republican “Gang of 8″ senators: Jeff Flake (R-AZ), John McCain (R-AZ), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) – in order to provide the input of law enforcement to their immigration bill.

When Levin remarked that these senators nonetheless have had time to meet with the National Council of La Raza, Crane claimed: “Those groups are now running our agency… That’s why we’re not arresting people, that’s why we can’t do our jobs – it’s because they’re basically embedded in running our agency.”

A “disgusted” Levin called the information “stunning” and noted: “How in the hell are we supposed to get behind any so-called immigration bill when you just heard what Chris Crane had to say?… Folks! All hands on deck! Now’s the time to fight this!”

The pressure on the former Marine Crane and his agents for taking on their own bosses, and the massive establishment machine pushing amnesty must be immense. We salute their courage and will do everything we can to help them prevail.

Por La Raza, Todo! Joe Biden in full pander mode, totally without shame.

Few can equal Vice President Joe Biden as a race-baiting panderer. And Joe is increasingly making his professed amor for “Hispanics” standard fare in his stump speeches pushing amnesty for illegal aliens. Biden never misses an opportunity to put Hispanics – and especially illegal alien Hispanics – on a pedestal.

In January, addressing a group of newly-elected Latino members of Congress, Biden insisted that “now the nation — and I might add the hemisphere — understands the Hispanic community must be courted. Must be courted. You are the center of this nation’s future.”

And of course, by “courting”, Biden means pandering. And minting brand new Democrat voters from tens of millions of foreign nationals who either invaded our borders or illegally overstayed a visa.

This week, Biden lionized these lawbreakers - millions of whom have committed multiple felonies, such as Social Security fraud and identity theft, in the course of their stays here – as somehow noble.

Biden insisted that we have to pass the ‘Gang of 8′  illegal alien amnesty bill to give those in the country illegally a pathway to citizenship, because we would be “granting them the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Speaking at the Conference on the Americas on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., Biden told attendees from countries throughout the Western Hemisphere that America had to treat illegal invaders like none of those countries do – by handing them amnesty and citizenship.

And in classic Biden fashion, Joe expanded the pander-fest to all of Latin America:

“Because not doing that, it’s hard to make the case…to six hundred million people in the hemisphere, that we genuinely respect you all,” Biden said. “When we do not show respect for 11 million people here in America who hail from the very countries we talk about respecting. I don’t know how that’s done,” Biden said.

So we are somehow ”dissing” all of Latin America if we won’t hand full rights and privileges to illegals they exported here? Rights which no Latin American nation grants to illegal invaders in their own nations?

Keep in mind that in Mexico – source of 58% of U.S. illegal aliens - illegal entry is a felony, those re-entering can get 10 years in jail, and Mexicans are empowered to make citizens arrests of illegals and turn them in to authorities. Illegal aliens can be deported for any reason and without due process. Mexico has dozens of categories of jobs which only Mexican-born citizens are permitted to hold. Mexico puts Mexican citizens first. But we have to hand Mexicans who violate our borders and break our laws all the rights and privileges of American-born citizens? Simply unreal.

Three weeks after the shooting in Sandy Hook, CT, when politicians were using the murders as an excuse to grab the guns of law-abiding Americans, one lawman was calling instead for school kids to be defended.

Maricopa Country, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio denounced efforts to ban guns, saying “bad guys will always get their guns”, and that gun control “never solves the problem”. So on January 9th the Sheriff announced he would deploy 500 armed volunteers to patrol outside 59 schools in metropolitan Phoenix.  Joe’s 3,000-strong “Posse”  has participated in the many “immigration sweeps” the Sheriff has conducted over the past decade – resulting in the arrests of hundreds of illegal aliens, drug and human smugglers and gang members. Now they will defend kids in America’s 4th largest county.

His announcement enraged opponents – including those currently trying to recall Joe from office.

But his policy has proved popular with his constituents. Joselyn Wells, the mother of three children at a school where Arpaio’s posse members have begun patrolling, said she was excited to hear about the initiative.

“A lot of people sit around and watch these things happen, watch key signs and no one wants to do anything about it,” she said. “Nobody wants conflict, nobody wants to be out in the limelight. And he doesn’t care. He wants to do the right thing.”

Arpaio has since expanded his school posse to 1,000, and this week conducted extensive training for posse members in real-life shooting scenarios.

Twenty posse members participated in a number of scenarios at the Maricopa  County Sheriff’s Office training center on Saturday. Posse members were trained  on school shooting scenarios using guns with rubber bullets in a cafeteria setting, in hallways, and outside.

We salute Sheriff Joe for his stalwart defense of the 2nd Amendment, and for looking for a solution to the problem of school violence – defending children from violence – instead of kowtowing to political correctness, as far too many law enforcement officials have done.

The final briefs in the case were filed today, and Judge O’Connor is expected to issue a final ruling this week. Meanwhile, a tired Crane – having traveled between Washington, D.C., Dallas and Salt Lake City in 48 hours – took to the airways on FoxNews’s Huckabee program, to tell Americans what the 7,200 ICE agents he represents want from their lawsuit (‘Crane v. Napolitano’)…

 All we’re asking for is, one, some protection for our officers and agents, because currently this Administration threatens to fire our officers and agents who attempt to enforce the laws that we have on the books, so we’ve got to provide some protection for these law enforcement officers who are only trying to do their jobs.

Perhaps more importantly, we’re questioning the President of the United States. We’re saying ‘President of the United States, it’s your job to enforce the law, it’s Congress’ job to enact the law. And so,  Mr. President, you’ve overstepped your boundaries‘.

And we’re hopeful that the judge will rule in favor on this, because it’s extremely important to our country and our way of government, that we get things back on track and put everyone back in their prospective places and let our law enforcement agents do their jobs.

The widely-anticipated Heritage Foundation estimate on the cost of the ‘Gang of Eight’ illegal alien amnesty bill was released this morning, and it is a unmitigated disaster.

The ‘comprehensive immigration’ overhaul being taken up in the Senate this week would add at least $6.3 trillion to the national debt if 11 million illegal aliens are granted legal status, according to the conservative think tank. And that amount assumes the low-ball figure of “11 million” – which most serious experts say is a gross underestimate.

The cost would arise from illegal aliens tapping into the government’s vast network of benefits and services, many of which are currently unavailable to them. This includes everything from standard benefits like Social Security and Medicare to dozens of welfare programs ranging from housing assistance to food stamps.

“No matter how you slice it, amnesty will add a tremendous amount of pressure on America’s already strained public purse,” Robert Rector, the Heritage scholar who prepared the report, said in a statement.

“There’s no way you can look at this and say that it’s good for the American taxpayer,” Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint said. 

This study should be a deal-breaker for any Republicans who were even flirting with supporting it, as it would absolutely devastate U.S. taxpayers – who are already paying $113 billion per year for the costs of illegal aliens.

In the course of their lifetime, the report estimates that each amnestied illegal alien would receive on average $592,000 MORE in government benefits than they would pay in taxes. The $6.3 trillion figure is based on what illegal aliens would cost the government – receiving approximately $9.4 trillion in benefits and only paying $3.1 trillion in taxes.

Heritage says its $6.3 trillion is a “conservative estimate“. Annd of course since it uses the absurd “11 million” baseline figure for the number of illegals, the actual amount of debt amnestied illegal would add may be more than double the Heritage estimate. Far more credible estimates peg the actual number of illegals between 20 and 30 million.

Supporters of immigration amnesty have been skeptical of efforts to assign a cost to the immigration bill. Proponents argue that the value of bringing millions of illegal immigrants out of the shadows and presumably into the taxpaying workforce is immeasurable.

Stephen Moore, an economist and Wall Street Journal writer, said that despite the Heritage findings, there are other studies showing the legalization will be an economic boon that could grow the economy — in turn alleviating the country’s deficit problem.   

Sen. Marco Rubio, (R-FL), a key co-author of the legislation, repeated his claim that illegal aliens applying for legal status would not have access to federal benefits while they are applying.  After obtaining a green card, they would still be ineligible for many federal benefits for five years, said Rubio.

But Rubio is ignoring what Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) revealed last week – that given lax state rules for illegal and government benefits – millions of illegals would begin to receive benefits immediately. That’s because State laws often provide benefits for anyone “lawfully present.” And thus many illegal aliens  granted legal standing, known as registered provisional immigrant status, could immediately become eligible for public benefits.

And of course Rubio and his gangmembers completely ignore the simple fact that, due to the current misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment, when an illegal has anchor babies – children border on U.S. soil – they instantly qualify for food stamps, WIC, Medicaid and other benefits on their children’s behalf.

“Those who claim that amnesty will not create a large fiscal burden are simply in a state of denial concerning the underlying redistributional nature of government policy in the 21st century,” the Heritage report said. 

ACTION ALERT: IMMEDIATELY FORWARD THIS REPORT TO YOUR SENATOR. Tell them in addition to the numerous other reasons to oppose mass amnesty for 20+ million illegal aliens, the Heritage “conservative estimate” of an added $6.3 TRILLION to our already skyrocketing debt is insanity.

Shameless: Obama blames the U.S. and 2nd Amendment for Mexican gun violence.

President Obama delivered a speech today in Mexico City where he blamed the United States for being the root of Mexico’s violence. He even implied that the 2nd Amendment was to blame, after absurdly claiming he was committed to “uphold” the right to bear arms.

But worst of all was the shameless hypocrisy of a man whose Attorney General Eric Holder carried out a gun-running  “Operation Fast and Furious” which sold AK-47s and other weapons, which have been used to murder over 300 Mexican civilians, and 2 U.S. agents.

Direct quotes from Obama’s speech today:

“And we also recognize that most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States.  (Applause.) I think many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual right to bear arms, and as President I swore an oath to uphold that right and I always will.  But at the same time, as I’ve said in the United States, I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people.  That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It’s the right thing to do.  (Applause.)  So we’ll keep increasing the pressure on gun traffickers who bring illegal guns into Mexico.  We’ll keep putting these criminals where they belong — behind bars.“

Simply disgraceful – on two levels.

First, it is laughable that Obama is upholding the ‘individual right to bear arms’ after he just tried (and failed…for now) to pass the most broad-based gun-control legislation in a generation, and his political arm has promised to target every politician who opposed it.

Secondly, it was the Obama/Holder ‘Operation Fast and Furious‘ which insanely, deliberately put nearly 2,000 weapons – mainly AK-47s – in the hands of murderous Mexican cartels, without any attempt to track them. Many experts believe this disastrous plan was to cause violence, which then could be used as a pretext for a wide-ranging gun ban in the U.S.

Whether or not that was the objective, the outcome is clear and monstrous: Over 300 Mexican civilians murdered – dozens of them children. And also 2 murdered American agents: Border Patrol  Agent Brian A. Terry and ICE Agent Jaime Zapata.

In a single, horrifying massacre in 2010, as Spanish-language network Univision reported – 16 teenagers were slaughtered using ‘Fast and Furious’-linked guns.

ALL were killed by the guns that Obama and Holder handed over to their killers. NONE of them were the result of so-called “gun traffickers” or the 2nd Amendment. For Obama to blame the United States for this wholesale slaughter is just despicable, but hardly surprising. The man has utterly no shame.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry told the Washington Times he was stunned by the president’s remarks.

“The idea that a United States president would go to Mexico and make that statement is incredulous,” Perry told the newspaper. “His goal – well before he became president of the United States — was to try to disarm the American public. He just disregards the Constitution.”

He disregards the law on guns, as he does on immigration. He disregards the truth, lying by denouncing his own country, on foreign soil no less.

Just despicable.

For months, Stand With Arizona has been reporting (most recently here, here and here) on the massive increase in border crossings since Obama and the ‘Gang of Eight’ started promising amnesty for millions of illegal aliens.

And I have been interviewed by two dozen media outlets from the Washington Post and L.A. Times to CNN and even FoxNews. Each time I begged them to report the truth about what border agents were telling me – that a tidal wave of new alien arrivals was overwhelming agents and ranchers – especially in Texas.

We showed them emails and faxes, even one handwritten note from a border agent with the numbers. We even told them how DHS stopped releasing monthly statistics on apprehensions after the border crossing spike became known.

The national media ignored the evidence for 9 weeks – until now.

One of the reporters we spoke to, Anna Werner, from CBS News, is now reporting that arrests of illegal aliens crossing into the United States have nearly tripled in recent months in anticipation of the ‘Gang of Eight’ amnesty. To her credit, Werner spoke to border agents to verify the numbers we showed her back in March, and presented them on the CBS Evening News (video link).

In March, 7,500 illegals were arrested in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, which includes McAllen, CBS quoted agent Chris Cabrera as reporting. That’s up from 2,800 in January. And that January number itself is up 200% over 2012. In February, nearly 4,800 illegals were arrested in the Rio Grande.

CBS even reported (as we did at the time) how overwhelmed agents in McAllen used their station’s carport to process nearly 900 illegals caught over three days in March, as they ran out of space to handle the massive influx.

The CBS report included surveillance video showing more than 40 men, women and children crossing the border illegally from Mexico during the night.

“The people in Washington think they have this idea that the border is safe, the border is secure,” agent Cabrera said. “I think they need to come down here and take a look.”

And remember – the ‘Gang of Eight’ bill does nothing to secure the border whatsoever. Even its proponents now admit that. If it passes there will be an even larger wave of illegals crossing the border, leaving ranchers and border states devastated by cartel criminals, and the wages of American workers further depressed by illegal aliens.

CBS interviewed one rancher, Juan Mercado, who lives on border property his family has owned since the 1850s, and is now under seige. Illegals usually come across his property, but recently Mercado has seen a tidal wave of illegals streaming across.

“I’m being invaded by people who have no permission to be on my property,” Mercado said. “By smugglers, by illegals.”

Mercado is left exposed by the failed border security policies of Obama and Napolitano’s DHS. So, as we reported last year regarding Texas ranchers turning to AK-47′s to defend themselves, Mercado is now relying on his own security system: a gun.

“I get a clip and it’s ready to go,” he said.

Is that the best the Feds can do? Leave it to Americans on the border to fend for themselves as they concern themselves with blanket amnesty to satisfy slave-labor addicted big businesses, and ethnic intimidation groups? ENOUGH!
